We drove along the Provo River looking for a good spot to stop and fish. From the passenger seat I caught glimpses of the water over the guard rail between the curves in the highway.
I was grounded. The United States budget sequestration in 2013 meant sweeping cuts to the military and because my flying squadron at the USAF Weapons School in Las Vegas was not “combat-coded”, we were left without a class of students to teach for six months. I found myself in the middle of the Nevada desert with no flying duty. In my mind, no flying meant “gone fishing”. But first, I would have to embrace the drive.
Imagine you have planned your next fly fishing adventure for three days in Bozeman Montana. Pretty darn good choice of locations. Fish the Madison, the Gallatin, and the Missouri, right? Or maybe take a day and go fish the Yellowstone. Why not? They are legendary rivers. Sounds great, but let me tell you why this might not be the best idea.
